Job Seekers Allowance?

I am19 years old and I have just started claimng JSA

If I get a part time job 8 hours per week can I still claim JSA

"To qualify for Jobseeker's Allowance you must be unemployed or working on average less than 16 hours a week."

It says I can but I don't really understand this website; can anyone explain in simple terms please? Thanks

As far as I'm aware you can still claim the JSA .. They will dock what you earn out of your JSA but will continue to pay your NI contributions. I could be wrong but that is how I understand it.
  • Hi there,
I used to work for the Jobcentre a few years back and unless the rules have changed it worked like this:

Like the OP said, you can work up to 16 hours a week and they deduct what you earn out of your benefit, minus £5 - so basically, you get to keep £5 of your wages. So as long as you work no more than 15 hours, 59 minutes (You must'nt hit 16 hours) you can still claim JSA.

eg: You work 8hours per week @ £5 ph = £40 per week
You recieve (example) £50 per week JSA payment
They deduct £35 from your JSA, leaving your JSA payments at £15 per week + you keep your wages.

Like I said, I worked for JCP a few years back and rules do change frequently so best check with whoever you sign on with when you next go in, but this was def how it was. Hope that helps a bit.
