Multiple mileage claims for one vehicle.

Hi all,

Great forum, I hope someone can point me in the right direction with my query.

I currently work in a temporary location on contract so I claim for my miles to work and back thorough my umberella company which is fine. However, my partner then continues on to her job in the car and uses it for business trips during the day, she then picks me up and I drive home. Her employer gives her 12p per mile for her business trips (not the miles to work) so my intention is to claim the remaining 28p for her, but I am conerned that HMRC will not permit this. I can't see that we're doing anything wrong, so my question is: can more than one mileage claim be made for a single vehicle.

I apologise if this question has been asked before, I certainly have found the answer if it has!!!

Thanks folks,
Ulster.

Unless you can show that she is doing work for herself (as self employed) or you on that trip, I would not try claiming. If you intend giving it a go, I would ask first. The tax people are quite helpful and even provide courses on "the system."

You cannot claim the 28p for her, she would have to make the claim against her own tax. You can make as many claims as you want against one vehicle as long as you are not double claiming for business miles. The 40p is to cover the fuel and running costs which apply whoever is driving the car.

Thanks for the responses, I realise that she will need claim against her own tax, I'm just helping and making sure we stay the right side of the law!!

It appears that the claim will be ok as her business miles are only claimed once and being claimed against individuals not the vehicles.
