Am I right in thinking that if you leave your property empty you are exempt Council Tax for 6mths and thereafter pay 50%?

It depends what part of the country you are in. Some places this is true (like Staffs) whereas other places only give you a 10% reduction after 6 months (like Devon).
Total Madness!

If you move out of your property and remove the furniture too then you are entitled to up to six months exemption, after this it depends on the council under which you fall. You could end up paying from 100% of the charge after this date to 50% of the charge.Official DFW Nerd no. 082! :cool:Debt @ 01/01/2014 £16,956 Debt now: £0.00 :j

Great...thanks for replies guys - I didn't realise it varied from one authority to another - our sale fell through couple of weeks ago after being empty for 6 months, so I will just chalk up the £80 Council Tax I now have to fork out to that - just one more expense
