My son has lost his P45, he needs it for the tax return as for a few months he was running a business as well as working. How can we get a copy ?

No. Only thing he can do is to ask his employer for a letter showing his pay and tax to the date he left them.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

ok ta. Will they give it to him no problem ? and can the tax people do anything if they won't ?0

presumably he has his payslips... just send copies to the HMRC
otherwise he can provide details of his employment to the HMRC who will be able to find his details0 -
When you say he needs it for his tax return - do you mean his self assessment return.
If so he doesn't need it (no forms are required to be sent in with the return) so if he has his last payslip and has the last pay and tax details then just completing them on the return is fine.
If it is for a return of tax overpaid last year not being dealt with through self assessment, then there are a couple of options check with HMRC to see if they have received the P45 part 1 from the ex employer and if its noted on their system you don't need it, you just have to supply any other details for other employers through the year.
If they haven't received it, contact the employer ask them for a statement of earnings for the time period concerned and that will do just as well.
Worse case scenario is previous employer hasn't submitted the details to HMRC and you haven't got your copy. if they are still trading them HMRC will write to the employer and try to retrieve details (but this could take some time)He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Sent you a PM suso --- and how many payslips does he need ? Yes it's self assessment.0
