Badly stained toilet seat

Not sure if this is correct board, but dithering between here or "In my home".
Board moderator, please feel free to move. Thought best to start off here for cleaning suggestions.

Problem is that MIL has a very badly stained burgundy plastic toilet seat lid (on the underside), due to looking after an elderly male relative for some time.
She has tried to clean it with allsorts, but nothing so far has worked.
Hubby going round again tomorrow to try out my latest suggestion, which is soaking in the bath with oxy-clean stuff, although doubt that will work, but worth a try.
Anyone got any suggestions for removing the stains at all?

Further to above, she just wanted to replace the toilet seat, which would have been no problem whatsoever, if she had a normal toilet. Hers is square, and requires a special toilet seat, an "Ideal Standard Michelangelo" not something bog standard that you can just pick up anywhere. Found a company on the internet which deals with obsolete loo stuff.
She called them, and was quoted £163 for a toilet seat!

If we can't get the seat cleaned, she is quite happy to have a wooden seat, or something that will tone in with her burgundy suite - it's just trying to get such a thing that is the problem.

No point is suggesting a new bathroom suite, as no way could she afford to have a new one installed, and other than the stained underside of the seat, the bathroom is in spanking condition.

Another thing hubby has thought of is painting the seat with some kind of plastic paint - is this possible?

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions, ideas, tips, would be most grateful.

(Still having a heart attack at the quote for the toilet seat!)

Price gave me a sharp intake of breathe too! However, a new toilet on it's own shouldn't be that expensive and the fitting could be easy as most new'ish ones just slot in - ours does and the fittings are now 16 years old. The floor layer just took it off, plonked it in a very inappropriate room and then plopped it back on again very easily.

Hope this helps. Other than that I have no idea about the cleaning but am sure that many others will have.

    Thanks for that Gers.
Hadn't even thought of replacing the toilet. Will have a wee search and see if we can maybe buy a burgundy toilet, or if that is not possible, now that you have put that idea in my head, can go for a second-hand clean burgundy toilet!
Although I have used MIL's toilet on many occassions, haven't really paid any attention to the base or anything, so will have to go along and investigate, but won't be until the weekend. Can maybe compare measurements with ours which is not as old as hers.
    Thanks again.
