Rates Payments

Hi,
I have arranged this year to pay my rates in one instalment. This was due to be taken last week on 28/04 but as yet it hasn't been taken. Is this normal? I'd really like them to take it a.s.a.p. because there's always the danger of spending it while it's there.:o
Any feedback gratefully received!

Hiya
i rang them on Tuesday with the same query as yours only i'm not paying all at once !! the girl told me they had the dd details and everything was in order..my 1st payment wasnt due 'til 28th May...not april as stated on my bill. they just add a month on at the other end.( i could see my dd wasnt showing on my online account)
but it might be worth you giving them a ring..or i think you can pay at pay point...can you not with a bar code thingy on the bottom of bill(not sure if i'm imagining this or if its another bill i'm thinking of)?0 -

A direct debit needs to be setup within a certain date of the month, for example if it wasnt setup by the 10th it wont lift on the 28th of that month but will lift the next payment date, I would guess yours is due out on the 28th May although with it being a Sunday it will come out on the 31st!
Also if you had requested a direct debit single payment last year thats why it continued this year

Also if your setup for 1 single payment and the direct debit is due in may you will still recieve the 4% discount0 -
Cath,
you're correct. I rang the RCA today and it appears that I missed the cut off point so they will lift the monies this month instead. Got the money removed from my current a/c. Just need to remember to replace it before they try to take it again.Cheers,

This happened me a few years back too, but instead of adding another month on at the end, they made me pay it over 9 months. Grrrr, was not pleased as I had submitted my DD details in time and they just hadn't passed them on to bank in time to set it up, and I was particularly poor at the time. And was doubly not pleased, as rates folk never wrote to me to tell me they were doing this, so got a big shock when the larger amount came out. And triply not pleased because they were very unpleasant when I rang and asked what was going on. Still, not like I hold a grudge or anything ?!!0

Another month can't be added on as the rates year runs the same as the financial year, so the last month for direct debit is February. Bills are printed in March for to be sent out in April so any payments in that month wouldnt be accounted for on your bill. If your direct debit was set up in April then it could be run potentially till February but as you where set up for 9 months it was only set up in May. If you see my reply from a few days ago, the direct debit needs to be set up before a particular date usually within the first 2 weeks of the month to get the direct debit for the same month
I wish though you'd been speaking to a nicer person at the time who maybe could've helped you better

Cath, what she is saying is that she had to pay the bill over 9 months, instead of the usual 10 months.0

Yes I know that

hi Cath
thanks for your reply. I'm ok about the DD having to be set up early in the month to guarantee the payment starts at the end of that month (I have the misfortune to work in a bank, so see it from the other end as well!). What annoyed me was that 1) I had returned my DD mandate to the rates office in plenty of time, the delay was at their end, and 2) I was not issued with a letter telling me of the revised repayment amount (which is in breach of the code of practice regarding DDs), and when I asked (politely, I might add) for one to be sent, the girl on the phone told me I had no right to be informed in writing, refused to send me written confirmation and was rather rude about it too.
I was intrigued because an earlier poster, Edtheduck, said that a month would be added on at the end.
Anyhow, I appreciate your response, its all in the past now, I was just having a wee rant !!!0 -
