Not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes...
Spoke to my mum today (she's 76)...she said she'd got home to an answer phone message with a number to return the call. The message also gave her "a unique reference number", they identified themselves as Buchanan, Clark & Wells. After looking them up on the net (and here) I found them to be debt collectors.
I rang the number, gave the chap the reference number, asking who they wanted to speak to. The chap gave me the name of the person he wanted to speak to - a man's name, who is neither a friend nor family, in fact never even heard of, but the phone number they had was my mums phone. I told him no-one of that name lived or has ever lived at the address which corresponds with my mums phone number, and am hoping this will be the endo of it, although am a little worried my mum will now start to be pestered by this company - is this likely? and what measures can she take should they begin to pester her?

they may well start to pester, but chances are they were just fishing and might now go and leave your mum alone. if they don't then there are template letters at https://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk that might be able to help.
