Is this right??

hi all, also posted this on the loans board, but feel more at home here:D
any answers would be great

anyway
took ds2 down to HSBC bank today to turn his child account into a student account. We were not going after the overdraft but while we were there she said that if he did want it then everyone who lived at his home addresse would be credit checked:confused:

is that right?? I thought that an addresse could no longer be "blacklisted" only individuals?? (I know that they will be checking people, but if one is dodgy then thats it, no overdraft for anyone?) and what about people who live at this addresse but are not finacaily linked to my ds2?

do you have to give your permission , or at least apply for a service to allow an institution to credit check your file?

many thanks for your help

  • Sounds iffy to me, how old is ds2??? is he still of 'dependant' age? is his account linked to you?

    hi
    thanks for getting back.
He is 18 and just off to spend 3 yrs drinking (I mean studying) at university.
We have no linked accounts, and the hsbc is only in his name, and nobody else in the house banks with them.

Since I've got home I am getting concerned and cross about this. My dh's sister stayed with us for a yr and has just left. AShe has terrible debts (she was sorting herself out while here) and I am worried that they will check her as well, as well as my other, adult children.

Surly they have no right to do that??

I always thought the credit check was on the person, not the address. If the account is his only, and no-one else is linked to it, there should not be a problem. If they do start being funny then he should appeal, or open a student account elsewhere.

  • As far as I am concerned they can only access the details of the person that the account is for, he is over 18 and the account is solely in his name therefore he is responsible himself, for them to access the details of other people is a misuse of personal information - especially as others don't even bank with them.

Perhaps you should pop back in and speak with a manager, it may just have been an as yet untrained member of staff being over-zealous.

It may be worth posting on the current accounts/banking board, there are a couple of ex bank managers there who should be able to tell you what the deal is. It might also be worth a look on the callcredit/experian/equifax website and also the information commissioner's website.

The whole postcode?! That's insane, we share a postcode with about 10 other houses, whereas my mum shares a postcode with all the houses on her street (30-ish).

asked about that--he had alittle think and then said it would only be for our house. asked him why they would bother if they were not going to use the info anyway and he didn't know.

I have a feeling that they might do this and then refuse him an overdraft but give us another reason, such as no credit history.

the thing is--what credit history can a person who only turned 18 a few weeks ago have? I didnt want the bloody overdraft but now I'm cross about it and think he should apply anyway

If they did turn him down would that be on his credit history??

sorry if thats a daft question, but we have lived without credit for so long I really don't know anything about it.

    many thanks

Hmm, wonder if they're doing it so that they can offer to 'help' you with any debts you have? Credit checks are done on the person not the address. If he's turned down because of someone else having a bad rating then I'd complain to anyone and everyone. You can have three credit checks in six months without it affecting your credit rating.

To be honest, even if they offered him the account I'd be tempted to go with a different bank anyway!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
