Comparing prices

Hi all,

I buy a lot of the same kind of foods on a regular basis - seeds, organic dried fruits, nuts etc.
The price of these can range quite a lot from shop to shop.
Is there a database for comparison of prices for common foods.
The main supermarkets would be a good start.

Cheers,
Steve

Tesco's price check compares Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury's I think. You can get to it on this link: http://www.tesco.com/pricecheck/
  • Thanks choclare. That's a good place to start.

sherridge101 - using a comparison price checker such as the Tesco's one, is all well and good just so long as you bear in mind that they will be a bit biased and if you trust their speed of updating ;)

An alternative is to keep your own "price book" - yes, this does take some time and effort of your own, but then, you will be making price comparisons from the most relevant stores near to you that you choose and the brands of foods that you have any preferences for.

An older thread on Price Books might be worth a read through and squeaky's Practical Shopping Tips Collection

You might be better off buying from a wholesaler or an ethnic (indian/asian) trader.

I recently got the following from Suma:

    3kg organic red lentils £3.78
    3kg organic brown rice £3.58
    1kg linseed £1.53
1kg unsulphered apricots (sulphered were cheaper) £3.07
    1kg cranberries £8.01
    1kg organic pumpkin seeds £3.19
    1kg organic sunflower seeds £1.99
    1kg organic sesame seeds £1.95

Also, the non-organic ones were cheaper, but not by all that much.

  • Thanks for the advice.

Queenie - a price book sounds like a good idea.

Trow - can you buy from Suma as an individual or do you have to be a company?

    Thanks again,
    Steve

I'm not sure if you can buy as an individual (and the minimum order for free carriage can be quite high depending on where you stay) but you can certainly buy as a group of private individuals, which is how we organise our order - we were the (name of place) wholefood co-op and are now the (name of place) wholefood association. The membership agreement of our own association actually states that weare not allowed to purchase for business reasons!

The closer you are to their HQ the better. Its worth a look if you buy in quantity or know others that might be interested in ordering also. There are other similar places to order from - if you try searching OS for 'suma' or 'bulk buying' I reckon you will come up with some more info.
