Absolutely shocking.
:eek:Mrs Byrd, which isn't her real name, established that the only creditors were the local council so she contacted them to explain that she thought her daughter was exempt from paying the rates.
She was told the original council tax debt of around £2,000 had gone up to more than £12,000 because of the bankruptcy costs.
"I did offer £8,000 but that was turned down," she told 5 live.
"I said 'I really can't pay any more' and they more or less said 'we've got to go ahead with it, we want the money back'."
The Byrds contacted a solicitor but were told no legal aid was available to fight their case.Dum Spiro Spero0 -

They're IP's. Probably checked land registry for property and then ran credit report to see if one of their regular clients were a majority creditor (they could then be appointed Trustee without calling a meeting of creditors).0 -
still confused! how would they know to check for me? how would they know about our assets the day after BR?
We did have a Trustee appointed by the OR but a local one with a different name.. some equity in the property at the time of BR.. do they do a credit search on everyone who goes BR?0 -

Not entirely sure how it works, but with you having a Trustee appointed it seems to indicate that they were searching to see if they could get appointed via a majority creditor.
Maybe one of your creditors know about the property and asked them to check?0 -
The plot thickens, the search was done the day after BR I dont think anyone would know at that point!
Our trustee was apointed a week after our BR. Just find it very strange. I suppose it is possible that they were approached by the abbey with a view to making us BR? the reason for the search was debt collecting just when i saw they were IPs i was very confused
thanks anyway JCS i guess it does not matter after this amount of time just me and my curious nature.0 -
This story is unfortunatly very common.
I support my cousin, who has a learning disabilty, can hardly read or write and most certainly cannot understand letters was threatened with all sorts of things by Bromley council.
His mum died a few yrs ago and I have just started helping him--trouble is they refused to talk to me cos of data protection, he won't talk on the phone and it was a real mess.
Funny thing was Bromley soc services had assessed him as having a moderate learning disabilty and knew he couldn't read but they still treated himvery badly.

Hearing stories like yours Churchrat make me heart sorry but extremely angry at the same time. It's a shame because I always thought of Bromley Council as being the better of the bunch of that area (I live in a neighbouring borough) If that indeed is the case I dread to think of what is happening in other parts. Then I should know better-I deal with social services on a regular basis, the service just isn't what it used to consist of.There used to be a street named after Chuck Norris, but it was changed because nobody crosses Chuck Norris and lives.0
