Unknown base costs

Hi
Does anybody know how I can find out the base costs of various shares that were purchased on various dates between c.1980 and c.1995?
The husband purchased the shares in the name of his wife and now the husband has passed away. I am completing the wife's tax return and a couple of disposals were made in 2008/09 but there appears to be no record of the base cost! Could the share registrars help? There is no info re which stockbroker was used to purchase the shares.
