Never been in debt, but got a collection ??

Hi wondering if anyone can help here.

The other day, I received a letter from a company called Rockwell Debt Collection Agency demanding that I pay them in full within seven days or they will take immediate action.

Now I have only ever banked with one bank (barclays) I have never had a debt, I don't have any credit cards and never have had any, and I do not owe anyone or anywhere any money and have not for at least 20 years (I owed the natwest 10 quid about 20 years ago by a withdrawal error (used a cash machine to empty my account and did not think of machine charges) which I paid quickly back to them, My Account now has at my request from many years ago absolutely no ability to go over drawn, however I have never even come close to doing that.

So after making sure I can never go in debt, I receive this letter demanding that I pay this debt shark 489.39 pounds within 7 days ?? it has no mention of what this is for, it has an account number which is not mine, but it does have my address, which is not an address that one can get mixed up on (I live thousands of miles from the UK now and my address is in a different language) not even the British gov have my address, although the embassy do keep trying to get me to reg on LOCATE (in case I need to be evacuated), but I believe that I have the right to keep my details private, the only place that has my address is barclays bank however they claim that this has nothing to do with them.

Now it takes well over 2 weeks for any letter to arrive to me, so this 7 days and gone even before I received it.

So does anyone know my options on this or who to contact as this has to be either a con or a big mistake, it is not a lot of money I know, but i refuse to pay for things that are not mine, but as they have my address, would they really send over a debt collection man ? (poor guy would be suicide coming to this country).

I can tell you though i almost had a heart attack when I opened the letter with all that big RED warning type

  • Hi

send the prove it letter (sorry not sure where the link is). this essentially means that they have to prove that the debt is yours. If its not yours i have no idea how they would do this.

i would not worry about it.
  • If your 100% sure its not yours simply ignore it, if you send them ANYTHING or contact them at all then your acknowledging your presence.

Dont do anything in my opinion. its most likey a scam of some sort.

  • I'd ignore it if you are sure it's not yours.

They are probably "fishing" which they are not allowed to do. They probably have a debt that they can't trace the owner and are sending letters out to people with the same or similar names in the hope that someone will ring up and query it so that they can bully and threaten into paying.

Just ignore and see what happens next...nothing probably.
