can a resignation be withdrawn?

Evening all, i have had lots of ill health issues this year and have been off sick for 4 months from my job, im hoping my GP will let me go back when i get an appointment, hopefully this coming week.

Due to my health i decided it would be best to leave my present job and therefore i got another job and im due to start at the end of the month, with less responsibility etc.

My current manager sent me letter expressing her concern at me resigning. She is keen for me to meet with her to discuss my options so that i dont have to resign. That probably means going part time which would be fine. The letter was very encouraging and i am now not sure ive done the right thing by resigning. I honestly thought it would be best for the workplace if they did not have me holding open a position someone else could take if im not signed back on by my GP.

Anyway what im wondering is if we meet up and discuss the situation and i can go back, how does it work withdrawing resignation?

I give 4 weeks notice which is from 24th August so i dont have long. Do i just send a letter withdrawing it?

I have spent so long making this decision i feel im going mad. Now its all confusing again.

I just want to do what is best for my current job and my health which i honestly thought this was, i thought she'd be pleased i was leaving.

So back to my actual question (sorry!), if im going to withdraw my resignation do i do it ASAP?

    You can't just decide to withdraw a resignation (unless it is what is known as a 'heat of the moment' resignation which this doesn't seem to be), so your employer would be entitled to hold you to it, if they chose to do so.

    BUT, a resignation can be withdrawn if both parties agree to this.

    I suggest you go along and have the meeting, see what they say, and then decide what you want to do.

    yes you can withdraw a resignation if both parties agree - so go see what they suggest. but - they can decide to accept resignation.

    Be aware that your current employer might decide to make you a 'new starter' if you decide to withdraw your resignation and go part-time. So you could have a probationary period and lose any rights you've accrued by being there a while.

    However I'd meet your boss and see what she says. They might not do that, and if you think you could cope with part-time hours, and that that would be better than the stress of starting a new and therefore unknown job, that's well worth considering. If she really wants you to stay you could ask for it NOT to be a 'new start' but a continuation of your current employment, just on different terms.
