I've frozen skimmed milk and found that it took along time to defrost. Once it had defrosted it was as good as fresh. I buy and freeze whatever seeded bread is on offer and my family haven't noticed a difference. It does tend to be a bit drier if done in the microwave but I roughly know how much bread is consumed so I plan accordingly.0

We always have milk and bread in the freezer. I find that "plastic" bread (eg Kingsmill or Hovis) freezes better than the bakery bread which we normally have.0

I buy a few Hovis loaves at a time. They're the same once they've been deforsted as when you buy them fresh. I didn't use to freeze bread either until I started buying this kind. http://www.hovisbakery.co.uk/hovis-range/soft-white/
When my son was little, the milkman used to deliver 7 pints (in bags) of frozen goats milk on a Monday (he had excema - my son, not the milkman!)). I just used to defrost a bag a day and it was fine. You don't get bags now and i've never frozen ordinary milk though.

My OH used to moan about frozen bread too. Now he just accepts that if he wants bread thats not green and furry, he has to get it from the freezer
Mostly it gets toasted anyway so what difference does it make if it's a bit dry
I often separate the loaves up into packs of 2 or 4 slices ready to be toasted. Makes it easier than trying to prize off frozen slicesworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
I've just started freezing milk as that 2 for £3 offer is sooo tempting and we can't quite use it all before it starts to go off. Normally I would buy a large carton perhaps twice a week and have some small cartons of UHT in case of emergencies. Kept sealed in the fridge semi skimmed does seem to keep almost a week though.
Bread, I'm happy to freeze we buy warburtons seeded batch and I've never noticed a problem. But again it will last about a week if you keep it in the fridge. You need to keep it well sealed though to stop the fridge drying it out. Also if it does start to grow a bit of mould cut it off and toast the bread and it will be fine. You can save waste by doing this, and if you won't use the slices of toast turn it into breadcrumbs and freeze them for use in cooking.
I used to shop too often too and now try to restrict it to once a week (despite our small freezer) although sometimes I need a second run for fresh produce, sometimes it is more like I end up shopping every 5 or 6 days, with every other one being a bigger shop.
Could you arrange to collect bread and milk on your way home from work or for your husband to call in after work if he would rather have these things fresh?0 -
How about just taking enough money with you to buy bread and milk when you go to the shop? I need to try this as i'll pop in for one thing and come out with 2 bags full.0

That sounds so obvious but I had actually never thought of it. Next time I go into town I'm going to try taking a fiver and no cards and see what happens...
Knowing my luck they're will be laods of really good reduced items/offers that I'll miss out on! But then if I didn't need them I guess they aren't bargains...June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

I buy Allinsons wholemeal and find that freezes really well. I freeze half the loaf in freezer bags, 4 slices in a bag, which is perfect for the two of us and ensures I have breakfast on a Saturday morning if I haven't had time to get to the shops :-)0

I think the problem is as much about the time taken and the petrol wasted as the temptation of buying extras! Which I can identify, when I shopped more regularly I don't think it cost us more, and we probably didn't waste a thing because we were buying what we needed and planning meals from what we had in, but it is such a ball ache going to the shops several times a week if you work full time.0 -
i too used to be gulity of the "20 quid for a loaf of bread " trips
now i freeze extra bread i buy and just go local with a fiver only in pocket if we do run out -- suprising how much u do save . even though u see £1.75 for a loaf as extorsion
thats a cheep loaf compared to what i was doing LOL0
