in Cutting tax
Hello
Not sure if I am posting this in the right place at all. Its a bit of a long story but hope youwill read and offer advice.
Split up with ex husband 2 yrs ago and in this time he has constantly tried to cause me trouble reporting me for burgling my own house etc. Ran away from all his and our joint bills, resulting in my filing for bankruptcy which was so humiliating and scary.
So anyway I have had to clear out the former marital home, he lived in it for the past two years and then did a flit recently, anyhow I got a letter from the tax office saying I hadn't filled in the self assessment form and that thye have info that I have been earning money that I should be declaring. I have never been self employed tho. So I lost the letter (in july) but I found out from my employer who my tax office was and I rang them. They had no record of such letter. Anyway was finally closing down the house this weekend and there is another letter saying that as I have not replied to their letter they are coming to do a home visit.
I have never been self employed. I once started to do personal shopping but didn't get enough assigments so gave it up, only earned between 5 to 15 pounds, is this letter likely to be about that or do you think that it may be my ex trying to get me into trouble? Anyone know what may happen next. I am going to ring them tomorrow but am literally quaking in my boots!!

Sorry, thanked you there by mistake.
When you say you started to do personal shopping but gave it up, when was that?
And did you set yourself up as self-employed with the tax office at the time??0 -

Hi there, I am not sure about the in's and out's of the tax issues but I think its highly unlikely that they would do a home visit, they are much more likely to fine you in the first instance. As you have already contacted the tax office previously and they have no record of any letter, it seems strange that you now have another one, surely there would have been a note on your file had there been an issue. Best thing to do is call them first thing in the morning and speak to someone.
I wouldn't get yourself worked up just yet, not until you have the full picture. If they confirm that the letter is not from them perhaps start making a file of any unusual correspondance as I am sure that there would be legal consequences for any one sending these letters under false pretences and is perhaps a matter for the police.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/money/reader_guides/article4061342.ece this link might be useful to you, I think the deadlines are interesting. You say you did not receive a letter until around July, but the deadline for the previous year would have been January 31st 2009 I think, and it can't relate to the current year as the deadline would be 31st January 2010. Would they really wait six months before contacting you?
As I say i'm not sure about the in's and out's of it all but definately sounds suspicious to me!0 -
HMRC do not turn up on your doorstep. They have no powers to interview you without your consent. As previous answer says, they are more likely to issue a self assessment to you and then issue a determination if you don't fill it in.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

I'd guess the letters are home produced.
Don't worry.
