Could my mouthwash be making my teeth discoloured?

I am pregnant and when I last had a dental check up a few months ago my dentist spoke with me about how during pregnancy, teeth and gums need protecting even more so recommended I brush twice a day (I do already) floss every day (I keep forgetting :o) and use Corsodyl mouthwash after brushing. So I took his advice but have noticed that now inbetween my teeth (almost all of them) are yellow/brown! It only seems to have happened since I started this new routine and It's starting to make me feel really emmbarrased. I don't think it's plaque cos the staining is only inbetween my teeth, not up near my gums. What should I do? Stop using the mouthwash? Will the staining go away?!
love my little man he is amazing :j

  • My dentist prescribed Corsodyl to me as I had gum disease, and I'm sure there's a warning on the label that says it may discolour your teeth.
  • Corsodyl mouthwash stains teeth particularly if you drink tea/coffee, red wine, etc. It is staining inbetween the teeth because you are not flossing and the mouthwash attaches to the plaque inbetween the teeth.
also Corsodyl should only be used for up to 30 days -read the label as it's all on there about the staining and length of use.
the staining needs to be removed proffessionally as it won't go away on its own

  • I had the same problem with that mouthwash and my dentist told me to use it first then clean my teeth.

They don't need 'whitening' - just a good polish, which will still be free on the NHS as you're expecting.

I personally wouldn't recommend regular corsodyl mouthwashes to anyone apart from those already with gum problems. If you are a person with gum problems, then better brushing and interdental cleaning would be a lot better for you than mouthwashes. If you won't put in the extra time that good cleaning takes, then the brown staining is better than your teeth falling out.

If you've never really had gum problems, then the corsodyl is probably a bit over-the-top. I wouldn't stop it though unless you've spoken to your dentist first. There was probably a good reason for him to recommend it.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks Toothsmith :D < << wish my teeth looked like that!

I,ve never had problems with gums and my teeth are in great condition, well, they were before! I,ve never had any fillings or anything. The only reason I can think of as to why he may have told me to use the corsodyl is that I mentioned to him that when I floss,my gums tend to bleed really easily.
My next appointment isn't untill January, do you suggest I ring up and try make an appointment for a polish before then, explain whats happening with my teeth regarding the staining?
