in Cutting tax
Hello,
I've just started work and im being paid £5.73 per Hour and I work between 28 and 40 hours a week, I have had a job in the past and this is my second official job. I get paid weekly on the Friday and the money goes into my bank account. I am 18 years old and I am starting University in 2 weeks, My tax code is BRW1, I am responsible for washing my own uniform and had to provide my own shoes. My total payment was 173.79 and 34.60 was deducted for income tax. Is this right to be on this tax code and have this total deducted? What should I do, if I need to do anything?
Thanks,

a bit unclear
is this your first job this tax year i.e. since april 2009?
are you going to continue working there once you start Uni?0 -
This is my first job since April 2009 yes, I will be working there during Uni aswell.0

They should give you a form (P46) stating this is your only or main job. They will send a copy of that form to the tax office, and the tax office will notify them of your tax code (should be 647L) - they will then refund any overpayment of tax. With regard to the uniform you need to phone the tax office yourself, and you will get an allowance (from memory I think it's about £130 a year) - they do this by adjusting your tax code upwards.0

If you can choose Box A on the P46"A – This is my first job since last 6 April andor a state or occupational pension."
I have not been receiving taxable Jobseeker's
Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit
then your employer can put you onto 647L cumulative strait away and you will get your tax back.0 -
Chrisbur is spot on
Just to add: the tax you paid/overpaid (BR means basic rate, so you paid 20% tax on all the wages earned, while you should get £6475 per annum without paying tax - this is then divided into weekly allowance) for this tax year will be refunded to you via your wages. For this your tax code needs to be 647L cumulative.
Just to make you aware that cheques from the tax office for refund is only for PAST tax years, current tax year is always refunded via your wages.
Ask your employer for P46 ASAP and watch your next payslips for the tax code.0 -
Thanks Guys, I filled out a P46 tonight at work to say that i have worked in the past, the form is being sent off on Monday to the tax office. Hopefully the Tax code will change and I will get refunded
Thanks for the help guys0 -

Do you mean you filled it in to say you have NOT worked in the past? The main point you need to get across is that this is your only job since April 2009, i.e. this tax year.0 -

I rang up the tax office and they said tick box B0

That's probably because you keep referring to it as a second job (which it isn't)
Why ask for advice on here and then ignore itI was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
