is there anything she can do to them so she can use them for chutney?
Will putting anything on the lid make them safe enough to put chutney in?
it would be a waste having them sitting so we are looking at ways to make them usable if there is such a way

no prob - just tear off a piece of clingfilm to place under the lid - i assume she is sterilising the jars in some way?
another method is to use the little wax paper circles you can buy.
I prefer the clingfilm its always to hand0 -
You can get the waxed circles from lakeland or any good kitchen / hardware type store (or often in the supaermarket near the sugar at this time of year). You will need to make sure you don't get chutney on the rim so it doesn't come into contact with the lid. It would be a shame not to use them as the honey jars are really expensive and most of us spend all year carefully hoarding jars for this short season of preserving!0

No, don't use wax circles. These are for jam only. The problem with chutney is the vinegar getting onto the inside of the metal lid and causing corrosion and a wax disk is not a waterproof (vinegar proof??) seal. The clingfilm method is much better.Val.0

I agree - the vinegar vaporizes a little over time and will corrode the metal - put cling film right over the mouth of the jar and then the lid over it.0

I knew there was a reason i didnt use the wax discs - thanks valk_scot!!!0
