Help as cant pay off credit cards

Hi all,

Hope you are well.

We have been speaking to the CCCS, and have given in all our income and outgoings. We have been struggling for months and after sitting down and going through it all, we cant afford to eat. So we spoke to CCCS, and are waiting for them to call us back on 17th of Sept. They advised us to contact the credit card companies and given in our reference and explain our problem to them. At the moment we are not behind but have no money for food, clothes or anything.

I called M&S today, balance of £3000, to my surprise they were great, i went through it with them, we agreed on £10 and they would freeze the interest, and when i can change it the £30.

HSBC , balance of £2600 how ever were very nasty, refused to stop the interest and would only reduce my payment from £57 to £46, she threatened me with debit collectors. I told them i could only afford £10 at the moment but she wouldnt listen.

My credit rating is shot anyway, and never want credit again, what can they actual do to me, the woman from CCCS told me the have no power at all, is this correct?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Mark

  • Hi warren100uk,

Just wanted to say I was in exactly the same boat as you with credit card debt and was finding it more and more difficult to cope with budgeting for everday things like food etc. due to paying off the huge minimum monthly payments on my cards. I only heard about CCCS through this site and contacting them is the best thing I have done, as i feel much more relaxed now about my debts. Creditors can still pursue you legally, but they can't get money out of you if don't have it. With credit cards they aren't a secured debt so even if they did take you to court they could only make you pay what you could afford anyway. The "Ask a cccs counsellor a question" thread is very good for getting advice direct from CCCS........
    Good luck :-)

she threatened me with debit collectors.

Well they have no powers and are very rarely used as the only thing that can do legally is ask nicely.

  • My opinion, not advice, is HSBC is terrible at accepting reduced payments. I personally would make token payments, expect a few snotty letters, and wait for them to pass it over to their Debt Collection Agents who will normally accept your offer and leave you alone as long as you pay.

Normally this is Metropolitan who once they have agreed an arrangement, they will let you get on with it.
