Tattoo...

Options
Hi all,

Im thinking of getting a tattoo done. I want something special that relates to me and not just a pretty one. Im looking for something dainty and feminine. I wanted to have the word 'gratitude' to remind myself to always be grateful for what i have, however Ive been advised against tattooing words...

Problem is, i dont know what i want...

Im not going to get it done until im 100%, just looking for inspiration...any ideas?

I would suggest watching Miami Ink if you can, its addictive and will really give you inspiration:)

  • I saw a couple of these programmes, couldn't help thinking that the girl - Kat? - was beautiful and the body art looked great on her.

What makes you feel gratitude, OP? Rather than a word, an image of something personal could make it more personal and decorative at the same time.

I think you mean Kat Von D, isn't her work outstanding? I agree she is stunning and I adore her tattoos, I was recommended to watch this show by sharronloves2spend and others when I was thinking of getting a tattoo they have a similar programme called London Ink but I haven't seen it yet, I now want at least three tattoos but will only get them done when I find the artist for each one, OP it seems to me that if you find the right artist you can have a talk with them about ideas and they can help you work with that, I wish I was in a position to recommend one but unfortunately not, yet;)

  • That's right, Kat Von D, Glowgirl. Not a look I could carry off, but perfect on her.

I knew what I wanted and took years to find someone I was prepared to ask to do the work. I had spoken to loads, who had shrugged when I said I wanted an Eastern Dragon and muttered 'flash up there' - and walked out straight away. The final one grinned, said 'great' and discussed how I wanted the dragon to look, what it was doing, the thickness of line, everything. She even worked with my breathing rhythm when inking to make it easier.

If it is the first light of morning that makes you feel glad, something that suggests that could be appropriate - the stars at night - a bird flying free - a flower from a bouquet - a mythical creature - you could chat with the artist and see what suggestions they come up with. If they can't be bothered to talk with you, go somewhere else.

It also depends on where you want tattooed and the style you like - eastern, western, tribal, etc.

Although I am of the opinion that copied photos are easily beggared up in translation and the worst thing I ever saw was a pretty girl with 4 inch high, inch thick gothic lettering (think Third Reich style) across her back - saying KEWIN (yes, they meant to write KEVIN). Especially as he left her before the tatt had healed and she was with a Barry.

  • hey i have 6 tattoos and they all mean something to me but i had to think long and hard before i got any done as your with them for life.

I have (in order i got them done)

My name on my right hip - this was done after i got out of a terrible relationship to remind me that i am my own person and i answer to no one but me

a picture of "tigger" from winnie the pooh on my left hip - This was done to show my childish side :) i still get giggles when the fun fair turns up, I dress up every halloween without fail and silly things like that!

Butterfly on my right leg above my ankle - this is to show my delicate side (i do have one its hidden lol)

A kanji symbol for "heavenly" on my right wrist - It does say this, took me 3 years to check! - if you look at the symbol you can see an A and a J - these are mine and OH's first initials

3 stars on my left wrist - one for me, OH and DD

DD's name on my left foot below ankle - shes always with me and never far from my thoughts when i catch sight of it

Please do research before having anything done and make sure you are happy with them - for gods sake dont have a partners name, my sister got married to one guy, with another guys name tattooed on her shoulder - it isnt classy!

And be prepared for pain - yes tattoos hurt - yes people say "nah it didnt hurt that bad" but thats because we forget the pain - look at people who give birth to kids! same thing lol

    Hope this helped

    Me x

I have 3!!! I suggest chatting with an artist. You can go to a good artist with a vague idea and then take it from there! My most recent one (which is not finished yet) evolved from ideas that I took to my artist and which she developed.
  • I agree with talking to an artist, i had my first tattoo way back in 2002. I knew i wanted another one but it took me until last month to get the right thing, and i ended up taking in a bunch of different pictures into my local tatooist, babbling randomly for about 30 mins about what i like what i wanted etc, got a text 2 weeks later, and there was the perfect design.

Totally original, totaly beautiful and totally mine :)

Part of me says wait and the right design will find you :)

Research your artist thoroughly and see a portfolio of their work, In my local town there is an artist with the skills of a 4yr old, I saw a very dodgy unicorn or I think it was supposed to be a unicorn, to me it looked like a stoned pink donkey with a crooked wing.

I give it an hour before the "tattoo's are chavvy, dont do it you will regret it" brigade appear :)

Have you considered having your words in another language maybe?

In the meantime, this is a good site for a browse :)
