the only thing putting me off is the mortgage endowment promise, how do you find out the value of this?

Ask your IFA or ask Std Life. Its usually given as a range as it depends on future invesmtent returns. Some Std Life staff dont appear to know it exists or are reluctant to give it. However, they do supply the info. So, push for it if you get a member of staff saying no.
