Has anyone painted wooden furniture with silk emulsion?

I want to paint some wooden furniture. I would use matt emulsion then coloured wax but I've acquired a large tin of cream silk emulsion.

Has anyone used this before and did you wax or polish over afterwards please?

I tried this on a child's desk many years ago. I painted and then ragged it in 2 shades of silk emulsion and then waxed it. It was a disaster. Although the paints were blue and white it came out a horrible dirty yellowish colour. I stripped it down again and painted it in Dulux satinwood (kind of similar to eggshell) and ragged another colour on top. Success!

I used to buy lots of second hand furniture for my children's bedrooms and paint them to match. I found that ragging or sponging hid a multitude of imperfections.

thanks hotchick but was that using silk emulsion? I've never used it before trying it I'd like to know of people's experiences using that. :)

    .

thanks missychrissy, I read on the 'In My Home.....' board that some of the Dulux satinwood is oil based and causes yellowing (others are water based and don't) and is more difficult to paint with - I'm wondering whether there might be something similar with silk rather than the matt emulsion? I'm not sure what causes the sheen :o
  • You'd have to finish with a clear varnish to make it durable or it would'nt wear very well.
I use silk/matt vinyl scraps in my craft projects but if I want them to last I always finish with a couple of coats of varnish.

thanks Mrstittlemouse - I usually use matt emulsion and then cover with boot polish then wax and they are fine, just worried about the silk element :)
  • I have an MDF tray I painted and decorated from scratch with bits of left over emulsions (silk and matt).
I finished off with three coats of varnish and by mistake it's went through the dishwasher without any ill effects.
