home grown potatoes

i was given a bag yesterday so had them for tea, do they normally cook quicker than the usual potatoes? they were more or less all cut to the same size and it was only about 10 to 15 mins later that i went to check on them to find that htey were ready!!

dont know what kind they were, the skin was quite firm and they didnt really have much flavour to them which i was expecting them to have.

  • It might be the variety that was at fault. :confused: My own ones have been great but I still prefer some home grown varieties over others.

    Mine usually take about that length of time to steam - can't say I'd noticed any difference from when I was using shop bought ones.

    Wouldn't let it put you off if you were considering growing your own. I've been really happy with our first year and the types we've had. ;)

    homegrown is something i would like to consider next year. need to get potatoe bags or whatever. dont have much of a garden for growing veggies unless its in pots etc
  • Some of my best potatoes this year were grown in the garden waste sacks from the £shop and poundland pop up garden waste bags.

    I grow lots in sacks and bags because my soil is so heavy. Courgettes do well in them, too. :)

    it will have been the variety for sure. although cooking in 15mins is good isnt it? using less energy to cook them and all that.

    Also growing spuds in pots is easy, tried it the first time this year using those black flower pots from the supermarkets. they were great, used the stuff that I grew my toms in last year and got a couple of meals from one plant.

    it's likely that as homegrown at this time of year they wouldn't have been dried off and stored so would have a higher water content so would cook quicker. Potato flavour can be influenced by the growing medium - jersey potatoes, for example, are grown with plenty of seaweed as fertilizer I think, which gives them their very recognisable flavour.
  • they were dug in the last couple of days, the soil was still damp to the touch when i got them out of the bag.

    the next time i get them i will remember not to leave them cooking as long as i do with shop potatoes lol
