BR forms - what was debt for

When listing your creditors, you're asked what the debt was for. For credit cards, do they mean, why you first took them out (eg. for a holiday/car/whatever) or do they mean when you started to go under?

I've had my credit cards for several years and they've been used for many things, so I'm not really sure what they want to know here? Could I just say purchases?

Thanks!
