Scam??? saying i owe money but not possible!

This morning i got a letter in the post from CL finance, claiming i owe them £37.50
The thing is.. i know for a FACT i do not owe anyone any money... this is just simply impossible.
I have not defaulted on any of the credit accounts i have in the last 5 years and prior to that about 2 default charges and that was simply added to the account balance and paid off... where they get i owe £37.50 just baffles me....
The letter gives no details what so ever of that this is for...
Having used the CAB previously for something similar they advised me to ignore letters like this, and not to reply unless they become threatening and then they will deal with it on my behalf.
So should i just ignore it? for now? And if i hear anything else contact the CAB or should i contact them straight away?
I can honestly say ive NEVER had anything in the post asking me to pay a sum of £37.50
Below is a copy of what i recieved in the post.. and yes.. it really was just like that... nothing clear about anything where this so called "debt" came from. ( obviously ive blanked out any personal details )

I know this is a silly question, but have you rang and asked them. It could be have been sent to you by accident?0

well, after the last ordeal and having the CAB deal with it... i dont really want to call them up because of the "acknowledgement" and then they would persue even more... if that makes sense...
The CAB advised me the last time not to respond to such letters..0 -
I dont think its a scam, I have read somewhere on MSE that GE Money usually sell/pass over debts to CL Finance, GE Money usually are store cards. could you have possibly defaulted a payment on one of your store cards for £37.50 that wasnt added on to the balance?
I appreciate you dont want to acknowledge the letter, but you could always then go to the CAB for advice and how you can go about getting it sorted once you know that its genuinly for you. Also you could check how old the debt is if it is yours and if its over the 6yr limitation period then you wouldnt have to pay it anyway.
Good luck0 -
well the thing is ive NEVER had a store card...
And the only catalogue i have now ( and for the past 3 years ) i have a good account history with.
The 2 credit cards i have also a good history... hence why i think this is impossible...
But whatever it is i know i dont owe it...
I will wait a little longer then.. see if they send anything else and then contact the CAB0 -
It could be a fishing letter, sent to anyone with a name vaguely like a debtors. I'd just ignore it, if they really thought you owed something then they'd give more info. Don't phone them, they'll just try to get money out of you.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

Send them a 'prove it' letter?Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

I agree with the CAB advice - just ignore it until they specify what the debt is for and who it was owed to. It may well be a fishing expedition they're on. They don't mind where their money comes from, jsut as long as they get it. It could be someone elses debt.
Only 2 things that spring to mind. Could it be for an old mobile bill? Have you checked your credit score recently? After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -
Checked my credit score and its actually really good.. nothing to suggest any debts in the last 7 years anyhow..
As for mobile bills... nope never had one always been careful with pay as you go stuff.
But thanks for the advice.. i will be sure post back if i hear anythign else.... until then i will just leave it be and ignored ( filing the letter to the bottom of the draw - just in case )0
