Can anyone recommend a good wind up lantern?

I'm determined not to waist money on the electricity this winter, I have my hot water bottle, throw and thick socks at the ready but at night I usually have 1 little lamp on and the TV (not a fan of the dark) and I want to see if I can get a wind up lamp to replace the little lamp when its just me knocking around the house.

I've heard mixed reviews about them - can anyone recommend one to get?

    Hi determinedtodothis,

There are a number of threads on the Green and Ethical board about wind up torches and radios but I haven't seen any on wind up lanterns but I've moved your thread across to see if the regulars there can help.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

I bought one from Maplin last year and it is really good for camping. Can be charged by hand, or you can plug it in to charge. It lasts a reasonable amount of time between windings. Its not particularly bright though and I would only use it at home in a power cut.

P.S. The version I bought doesnt have an emergency siren alarm - I cant imagine why anyone would want that!
