Charged because seller took funds early....

My OH has been buying pet food from an online retailer for the last 5 years.
The company have his debit card details stored on record, and are meant to take payment for £14 every 4 weeks on a Thursday. The goods are then posted on Friday.
Payment was taken on Thursday 23rd July, and he had expected the next payment to be taken on Thursday 20th July. However the company actually took the funds on Wednesday the 19th without giving him any notice that they were going to do this.
As my OH's payday is the 20th of the month, taking the funds a day early has caused him to go overdrawn and be charged £30 Abbey.
OH has contacted the company to ask why they had taken the money early, but the person that he spoke to said that they "didn't know anything about it" and would get a manger to call back. This was yesterday and we have not heard from them yet.
I know if that the payment had been made by DD he would be covered by the DD guarantee - could someone please advise if there is any similar protection afforded when paying with debit card ? Surely this company have broken an agreement with my OH in taking the funds a day early and with no notification of their intent to do so ?
I would really appreciate any advice, especially help in drafting an email to this company explaining why I believe they should take responsibility for the charge that was levied as a result of their taking payment early.
