What's the view on diesel tuning chips claiming improved efficiency?

The main reasons manufacturers don't generally do it is emissions and then reliability. Emissions are the key, especially on a fleet repmobile, as the wrong % CO2 can hurt sales not only due to emissions but company car tax.

If you must remap then a tuning box seems the sensible way to go. You can unplug it for servicing and it won't get wiped by a dealer.

Insurance is a small issue for most people in their 30s upwards. If you can afford the tuning box you can afford to pay a few quid for the increased premium. Just don't forget to tell your insurers - if you're lying in hospital with no way of removing a tuning box and the assessor turns up then you could get refused cover for replacing/repairing your car.
