I'm thinking about visiting Inverness and surrounding area in Sep or Oct for 3-4 days.

Any suggestions re castles, museums and historical places to visit please? Is it worth spending a day in Inverness?

Any nice places to have a cake and a tea you would recommend?

What about B&Bs?

Thanks.

  • Hi bhz-2!

Good choice - I really like Inverness, its such a lovely place & there is plenty to see & do in the area! I spent some childhood holidays there and took a trip up there last year with my partner. If you like castles, museums and historical places then you will be spoilt for choice! :D

Just off the top of my head some of the places I would recommend would be: Culloden battlefield (as well as the fields they also have a fairly recently built snazzy visitor centre if it gets too windy out there!), Urquhart Castle (by Loch Ness so lovely views & found the castle very interesting), Fort George (this was built in Jacobean times and is still a working Army barracks today, if you did visit I'd recommend you get the audio-guide thing that you can pick up at the front desk, which explains all the different buildings as you go round - we would have (quite literally!)been lost without it!!)

Am not sure if you are interested in wildlife but if so you could always take a trip out to Chanonry Point, it is said to be one of the best spots in the UK to see bottlenose dolphins.

We also liked trips to Beauly and Cromarty, they were both quite pretty wee places. It depends on how far out you intend to travel, there are also places like Nairn & Banff but havent visited those places in years so couldnt really say what they are like now, maybe some other MSE'rs will have a better idea :)

As for suggestions on nice places to eat I cant remember off the top of my head the names of places we went to (its too early in the morning I'm afraid :o) but will return to your thread when my brain isnt so fuzzy!! Hopefully thats enough to get you started for now and am sure some other folk will be along soon with some more ideas!

    Enjoy your trip!

    Thanks for the tips, ChocChip!

I definitely want to visit Urquhart Caslte and Loch Ness.

As I can only stay for a few days, I don't really want to drive too far.

If you have kids with you it is worth going to Landmark Forrest Park in Carrbridge - we took our 2 DS ( 9 & 7) for the day last Spet and they loved it - we used our Tesco clubcards deals for entry too - Have just exchanged some more and hoping to go Sept Weekend again - if this rain ever goes away...

The Dolphin and Seal Centre over the Kessock Bridge. It's free!!

Looks like it's closed in October though.
