Sainsburys Jobs - Are the hours rigid

Hi All,
Does anyone have any experience of working for Sainsburys, and can you tell me how rigidly you are expected to stick to the advertised hours. My eldest has been offered a job, but the contracted hours will sometimes overlap with football matches (he has a season ticket). Is there any chance the store manager would allow him to switch around his hours, or is he just going to have to give his ticket away when it happens?
Thanks in advance

Depends on store. Our schedules go up three weeks in advance, Which we then have to sign to say we can work, thus agreeing any overtime. You are expected to work your contracted hours, however most department managers can be a little flexible, we ask that if they are contracted hours that they want time off for then they need to try and swap the shift with someone, or sometimes we just put it up as overtime up for grabs if they are willing to be short timed. You are not obliged to work overtime unless you previously signed to say you would. He needs to have a chat with his Department Manager.0

As a retail food manager I would tell your son to take a run and jump if he wanted the store to work around HIS football games.
I'm not surprised you were made a manager in retail with an attitude like that.
Any sensible manager would allow people to switch shifts without fuss as long as it was agreed in advance. From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -
Depends on the manager and how the rotas are done. A lot of managers will try and change the rota around if staff want certain days off such as birthdays etc but I'm guessing they won't do it all the time, so don't expect him to be able to get every single football game off work.0

Sometimes you think people have priorities all wrong.
If you had read my original post I stated that he would be willing to give his match ticket away if he couldn't swap shifts.
Thanks for the responses everyone else.

Hmmm, I would imagine anywhere like Sainsbury's would be one of the best places to work if you wanted to have flexibility in your working hours.
It isn't a business with normal business hours (9-6 for instance).
I would imagine there to be various shift times which could be swapped with colleagues to suit various needs.
You work to live, not live to work...:o0 -
I think in this day and age with jobs so hard to come by he needs to prioritise his work commitments. I know it is a blow to miss the football after forking out for a season ticket but it really is the bigger picture which is important. It is an employers market at the moment and they can always find someone who will be able to do the shifts required of them. I am sorry if he has to miss his football though but he does have a job at least.0

Playing devil's advocate here but surely if anyone's posts should be removed it should be PBS's. I for one am fed up with constant negative and racist remarks made by PBS about the UK - but hey anyone can say anything about this country and get away with it can't they? !!0
