out of date smirnoff ice

Having bit of a drinks clearout... Am I right in thinking a large bottle of unopened Smirnoff Ice which went out of date in Jan 2008 could make one very ill and should be disposed of?

Don't think I'd fancy drinking it myself, but also don't want to poison anyone else!

  • If its been stored properly... I don't see why it would have "gone off" - Just like tinned foods, if it tastes fine it properly is! Alcohol kills off most stuff anyways.

We had a Heinz sponge pudding a week or so ago that had Mar 2004 as its date!

Had it cold out of the tin and it tasted great! Still here to tell the tale too :D

Not sure about Smirnoff Ice, but I agree that if it smells and tastes OK, it probably is...
  • Could you do me a favour please? Could you look at the alcohol content of it please?

  • I wouldn't normally be bothered but when I tried to pawn it off on my friends earlier they wouldn't touch it saying they've had only slight out of date smirnoff ice before and it made them ill - whether this was the fact it was out of date or jus that they drank too much I don't know!

    It's only 4.5% alcohol.

Throw away good booze?? Never happens in this house ;)

Drink it - food doesn't do a mission impossible and implode on the stroke of midnight on it's best before date. The worst thing could be is it tastes a bit stale but unlikely if the top is still on.

er - may I point out that whisky is aged for 12 years and then sold at a premium price the longer it is aged for?
but on saying that smirnoff ice is low alco content - but i wouldnt think would go off in a year. hmmmmmmmmmmmmto drink or not to drink ? cant advise you there - only you can decide - isnt there someone you dont like you could give it to?

Does alcohol not just get stronger as it "ferments"??

Full of sugar which is a preservative, as well as the alcohol.
