Have you kept the Ombusman fully up to date with the issue?

I'd be seething if I was you and feel very sympathetic to your situation.

I know it's added hassle but you should pursue compensation for both the time and money it has cost you to sort their mess out.

I had a lesser but similar mess with Santander last Feb but was all sorted out months ago with all in charges incurred due to their ineptness being refunded.
  • I had an issue with Nationwide which resulted in me also having to send them a copy of my credit report. The problem is something that was dragging on for 4 years. I'd twice received letters stating that Nationwide had made updates to my credit file when they clearly hadn't.

I told them that I wasn't incurring the cost of posting and didn't have a fax and asked for the e-mail address of a manager that could receive outgoing e-mails. I sent it as a PDF, explained my case again to them in the e-mail. I indicated exactly what I wanted them to do and gave them 28 days to comply. Within 1 week I had an updated credit file and a £50 cheque for my troubles (I'd only made 5 phone calls over the 4 years and always used a freephone number and so didn't incur any expense).

Hopefully you too will have a favourable outcome from your experience.
  • To be fair, Abbey did send me a £30 cheque as a goodwill gesture for the phone calls, but I had never totalled up the calls until today. I'm quite shocked - I didn't realise a 30 minute phone call on Vodafone to an 0870 number would cost £5.60!

The complaint is now with the ombudsman, but there are long delays there as we all know!

As it happens, I'm going to pay off my Abbey loan in February but this is just a hassle I don't really want to have. I can't wait to clear my Abbey and Barclays loans - I've already drafted the letter I'm sending to them both to 'thank' them for their exemplorary services and error-free customer support over the past year! ;)
