Need savoury oat breakfast ideas

With the approach of colder weather, and wanting to include more oats in our diet, I'm looking for some ways of using oats in a savoury way for breakfast. I'm happy to eat porridge with fruit but my OH is definitely a 'savoury' rather than a 'sweet' person so any ideas would be welcome.

You could put chopped or ground nuts in maybe? I used to add ground almonds and sesame seeds in mine (with banana and honey too though :p)

Or some people just eat porridge with salt don't they?

  • try this, you can make it with cooked spinach or soaked nori as a substitute for the laverbread,we also put a bit of finely chopped bacon(value misshapes)in it.
    Laverbread & Oat Cakes

    Makes 6 cakes
    Ingredients

    100g fresh or tinned laverbread
    35g fine oatmeal
    bacon fat to cook
    Method

Combine the laverbread and oatmeal in a bowl and use a spoon to shape 6 small cakes, about 5cm in width and 2 cm thick. Heat the bacon fat in a frying pan (or use the same pan as you cooked the bacon in), and gently slide the cakes into the hot fat.
Cook for about 2 minutes on each side, drain and serve as part of the Welsh breakfast.

We make porridge with just oats and water (soaked overnight if I remember, mostly I forget) and then cooked. I'm of Scots descent and eat the porridge with salt and milk which I like as I prefer savoury foods. My husband is English and eats the porridge with cream and brown sugar!

oat & potato cakes would be lovely with bacon rhttp://www.scotsindependent.org/features/food/potato_oatmeal.htm

These look tasty (scroll down approx halfway) http://www.irishcultureandcustoms.com/2Kitch/rBreads1.html

do you make bread? This recipe also uses oats & potatoes but is more of a loaf rather than the top one which is more of a breakfast side dish. http://asweetfantasy.blogspot.com/2007/11/dbc-oatmeal-potato-bread.html
