Scottish Power's exit fee

I have just had a call from Scottish Power who I currently have my gas and electricity with. I was on a fixed tariff that ended on 31 August. They say that I have broken the contract with them as I agreed to a transfer to E ON whilst still in my contract. I started the process with E ON at the beginning of August as I know that the process takes a few weeks and I didnt want to be on Scottish Powers standard tariff for too long. I said that the transfer wouldn't be going through until after the end of the fixed term contract but they informed me that because I had agreed to the transfer in the contract term I was breaking the contract and would be liable for a £50 termination charge. This doesnt seem right to me or is it my tough luck for not reading the small print closely enough....
Any advice would be gratefully received.

If you left them before the end of the contract then yes then can charge you that if it's in the term and conditions.0

Have a read of this thread, in particular the SP Company rep's posts. SP are shysters of the highest order

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
The scottish power rep Craig has categorically stated that if the actual transfer of the actual supply did not take place prior to 31 August then you should not be charged the fee.0

I am sure that Craig, the Scottish Power Rep. will stand by his posts assuring us that this charge would not be made in these circumstances (I took screenshots of them just in case there was trouble later) and if you PM him, he will help you if these charges are levied.
If only Scottish Power had come up with a decent deal, I am sure lots of us would have been more than happy to stay put.A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion0 -
Hi Tracey,
As the others have already confirmed, you should not be charged a cancellation fee if your supplies did not leave before 31 August.
Please feel free to PM me your account details and I can see exactly what is going on for you.

OP, strikes me you were a bit too quick to switch if you did it at the beginning of August.
I am also on a SP tariff that has just finished. I have followed their own instructions to opt out of their offered tarrif to put me on their standard rates. I am now free to switch wherever at no cost.0 -
I am in the process of moving from scottish power (who i have been with for 6 years!) as they no longer do quarterly billing and the monthly amount they want is £130!! I sent in meter readings for a 2 month period and my bill came to £69 for 2 months so dont know how they can justify £130 a month!!!would love to win an ipad!

Maybe because you did the readings for the summer months and when you turn your heating on in the winter your bill will go up a lot, plus you cook more hotter meals in the winter and maybe use the water more when you have more hot baths? I guess it depends what size house you live in and how many of you there are and they work it out this way.
We paid £57 to SP for 6 months last year when we moved then the heating went on and we've had to up our payments to £150 to pay the debt back plus this years bills - in our old house we was paying £150 a month but with electric heating so we thought we had got a good deal - then I worked the units out for myself and realised that it was not that much cheaper and we'll be paying around £115 a month for the years supply. I'd have rather have paid the higher amount for the year. At least you'll be in credit when the winter comes and can leave whenever you like. We cannot leave because we owe them the money.
Last year after moving in here I gave a reading for end of May to start of August BG and Eon and it was around £60 combined. That was without heating and cooking fuel though.
You could always opt for Quarterly payments.0 -
Just think of it as an extra bonus payment for their incompetence. The penalty is not enforceable. Let them take it then complain to the regulator. You will receive the penalty back plus compensation of £20 to £60.0
