Thicko tomato plant question

Ok don't laugh I have never done this before!

Planted some tom seeds and on the sachet it said when there are 4 leaves re-pot them, ok I understand that bit but there are loads sprouting up not just one in each little original pot so do I re-pot them as they are or split them up into fifty million other pots?

We always split them unless the roots are too delicate - sometimes the roots are tangled and they rip so then we re-pot together and split when they're a bit bigger.

Last year we had plants that were between 5" and 5"4' (yes I was sad enough to measure them lol), we kept cutting them back but then gave up, they obviously wanted to be that big :D We froze loads of tomatoes and had a good supply of pasta sauce and soup in the freezer.

Wow, well you've certainly got enough to choose some good ones from. You could always put extras on freecycle.

Good Luck with the tomato plants, I grew them for the first time last year and we had loads of tomatoes, well worth growing. Got some more on the kitchen windowsill at the moment. If you like courgettes they are easy to grow in largish pots.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only person who's overdone the tomato plants, we've also got about 50. Did slightly better on the courgette front, only grew 8 of those...

Yes, I've got a few tom plants on the go as well. You never expect such high rate of germination, do you, well I don't anyway.

They are well worth growing, once they do get outside and into growbags, thats after the end of the frosts. Make sure you keep them very well watered. A watering can full every day. If they get dry then you water them, thats what leads to split toms.

    Best of luck

Its so easy to sprinkle the seeds, get carried away and find yourself with millions of new plants that then need to be potted on.I've done that so many times :o as I always think that 1/2 of them won't grow...
I'm sure theres plenty of people that would love one of your tomato plants :) and you'll have plenty of tomatoes all through the summer.....
