How food costs have risen in a year

I have just got back from my annual holiday with my DD and family .We jointly save our Tesco coupons from one year to the next for our August holiday Usually we have between £125-30 in coupons to use for our food bill There are three adults and five children so it usually is more than enough .I noticed this year when I counted up our coupons that we had ammassed between us £217 in coupons which shows how much the price of food has gone up in the past 11 months .My DD and I buy more or less the same amount oof shopping from week to week so in fact our joint shopping bills have risen by almost £100 in coupons or in cash almost £1000.Now she has five children and is a very careful shopper, and like mme doesn't waste anything. Her husbands wage's and my pension hasn't risen by anything like the same percentage. Where is it going to end I wonder. It was only through counting out our coupons that I realised the shocking cost of food price rises. Thank goodness for this site I wonder what price rises anyone else has noticed recently .The pennies seem to creep on weekly and its so insidious that at first you just don't notice it.
I noticed that meat and vegtables seem to be creeping up again. But it's sometimes the things like soap powder and toilet rolls that have suddenly become a fiver a time. These are things that are difficult to cut back on ,at least with meat you can bulk it out.

  • Have you started flashing your clubcard when filling up with fuel? Utility suppliers? Credit card? This may account for some of the increase? Or is it purely food?

  • I havent noticed in terms of my cc vouchers because we moved where we are in April and are 2 mins from 24/7 tesco so i shop there all the time now where before i went all over. I have noticed the same as you though with prices as we tend to buy pretty much the same stuff and the biggest rises ive noticed is in the price of tinned tuna, salad, veg and fruit. I cant believe that i have seen an iceberg lettuce for a pound before now.

It seems to be the supermarkets are discounting frozen convienience food a lot now and they sell say frozen pizza, etc for a pound but put money on stuff that is healthy.

Im sure own brand tinned tuna used to be about 28p, last time i looked i think it was about 48p. Its cheaper to wait for them to put the branded multipacks on offer. I only notice this in particular as i buy a lot of it, im sure there are loads more examples.

I hunt for whoopsies now and batch cook and bulk out. I buy fruit either on offer or whoopsied as the market doesnt seem much better sometimes.

I have a well stocked pantry now and cupboards and freezer but it cost me a lot to stock up!

I will just continue to hunt out whoopsies i suppose!

Yes I agree with this, especially Tesco. They seem to always have pizza, dairylea Dunkers, jars of frankfurters, etc on offer but rarely seem to have good deals on their meat, veg, or fruit. Personally I find Sainsburys works out cheapest for us all around and partly this is because they seem to have a bigger basics range (In terms of apples, carrots etc) and they run more meat offers which makes up the bulk of our shopping. It always seems more expensive to eat healthily whereas chicken nuggets and pizza is always on offer.

I do agree though that our overall food shopping bill has gone up within the past year, we probably spend about £5-10 a week more now than we did 1 year ago and we have cut back about as far as we can already and buy very few premium/branded items.

Yes, have noticed that prices have gone up, but I try and buy sensibly when things are on offer rather than when I need them. I've got a well stocked cupboard as a result.

Often buy reduced to clear items for meals and that makes a difference.
  • Food has definitely gone up, but I have down a grade so have actually reduced my spending! I also shop in more places now, teabags in Sainsbury, marge in Asda (and any offers!), various items in Lidl. Definitely now spending less than I was.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
  • Nothing wrong with cheap pizza :p

  • Definately nothing wrong with cheap pizza now and then! But i just wont give up my decent tea bags! Well ive gone from my faves like the branded ones, to supermarket own to supermarket basics but the basic ones not for me. However im a bit mean and get the 28p teabags for DH cos he has a giant novelty mug and drinks tea loads so he gets them and i have a secret stash of my fave supermarket brand he isnt allowed near, otherwise they'd be gone!

    Im so cruel!

iwas in asda earlier and the reductions on fruit and veg were really good...20p a pack for organic stuff...that said it made me realise how much the original price was....i agree with the poster that commented on tuna...we used to eat loads when it was less than 30p a can...now i hardly buy the basic range because it is cheaper to buy branded on offer.....i get annoyed when beer /alcohol is cheap(we dont drink) and veg is expensive...seems a bit odd given healthy eating message iyswim
    onwards and upwards

Apparently this is why Tesco are now giving 2 points for every pound spent with them because at one time they were the leaders by far but now the Aldi's,lidl's etc are catching them up so they need to offer more of an incentive.
Mr T if you are reading this bring back the 1000 point codes that was a good incentive:rotfl:
