Apossible solution to debts

I ahve been visiting here although I am right now debt free. Several years ago I had a boyfriend who had a huge debt with a high street bank. it was I think 40K. I got on the phone and wrote to them and said that he was distressed, had no assets other than the family home with his children and that I would pay to have them write it off...I got them down to 13k. They wrote off the other 27k. Has any one else tried to do this? It works well on unsecured debt. And he didn't go bankrupt.

Was a thread about this a few months back where somebody had done something similar. Depends on your negotiation skills (yours sound better than most...), but it's pretty much what the CAB/Payplan people do.
