How about a consumer orientated 'file sharing' section?

Hi all,
Just wondering if the above would be feasible?
It could be use to share legal ebooks, TV & Radio shows (maybe Make Me Rich or older consumer orientated shows).
The Bit Torrent format would be ideal for this as it doesn't require the material to be hosted on MSEs servers and therefore, no bandwidth issues.
What do you think?

Hi Icebergx
Before there is any chance of MSE helping people fileshare, you'd have to get the blanket ban lifted. (I've already asked that a look be taken at the rules)
Right now I remove any discussions about filesharing that are posted on the Techie board.
Not even sure if I should be removing this thread?
Since this is the place to make suggestions about the forum I think I'll leave it to them to decide0 -
Hi icebergx,
In theory, that is a very good idea, and I'll certainly bring it up with Webby. The only potential problem is that it may require a lot of work to ensure that any materials are not in breach of copyright laws.
As sra says, we currently do not allow threads about P2P filesharing (even though I realise there are legal uses for P2P) because of the amount of copyright material that is often being transferred. Hopefully if we can find a way of relaxing our rules to allow for P2P talk while ensuring that the site is not seen to allow links that could potentially allow copyright laws to be breached. It is something I will discuss with the Forum Manager and Web Manager.

Thanks guys,
I think this could be a potentialy beneficial development for all us MSE (as long as it's not abused in the ways you mentioned above.)
I agree, policing could be hard. How about a system which takes into account total number of posts or 'thanks'., Not ideal, but maybe something to think about. My initial thoughts are shows like Make Me Rich would not be allowed because of copyright issues.
Any ideas as to matyerial that could be posted, and through which file sharing method (as I mentioned, Bit Torrent is my personal fav).
Cheers.0 -
Very bad idea. In my opinion. What programmes could legally be distributed this way? Very few, if any. Probaby none. The copyright laws still apply to "older" shows.
Steer clear.

Well I can think of half a dozen sites just off the top of my head that I get legal content regularly
Admitidly most of those sites also offer the same files as a direct download, but they beg you to use the filesharing link so they're not crippled with the cost of hosting large files.
If MSE used the technology to distribute content like the mutteings, I'd certainly use it. It's only fair to help a site that's giving you something for free by not using their bandwidth
And it's getting harder and harder not to talk about filesharing with all the big companies getting involved - and the next version of a certain browser having it built in so that it works automatically.0 -
*** Board Guide Note ***
... and could I put my Board Guide hat on for a minute and ask no-one to talk about any specific filesharing system or filesharing examples
So hopefully we can keep this thread open
Many thanks0
