another question for toothsmith..

HI Toothsmith,

How much would it cost to have veneers put on my teeth. I'm 28, they're not too bad, but a little crooked.

I'm dreaming of a smile like Cheryl Cole's. I think i would need 6 on top and maybe 6 on bottom.

Hope it's not too general a question - apologies if it is...

  • Im always facinated with these veneers after watching 10 years younger. Is it right they file your teeth to tiny pointy stumps first? But what happens if in 20 years time when they need renewing you are in a bad way finacially? Do you end up with filed stumps or is there another way?
They do look great though, well Cheryl's do but not Simon's...

20 years would be good going.

Could be as low as 6-8 years.

Veneers shouldn't take very much off your teeth at all, but it depends on the result you want.

If your teeth are otherwise healthy, it would take you from a situation where your teeth could last you a lifetime with just basic regular maintenance, to a state where major replacements were needed every few years - with each replacement being a little more destructive than the stage previously.

Cheryl Cole smile is great if you have Cheryl Cole money!

    Have you considered orthodontics.

Cost would be a lot cheaper at about £2 - £3k. (Compared to £2k - £10k + for veneers plus the replacement costs every few years)

It takes longer (2 yrs), and you'll proably need 'train tracks' - BUT - the lovely straight smile you get at the end will be all your own, and will still only be low-maintenance, as there will be no porcelain to stain or break.

    Well worth serious consideration.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
