Is suicide on the rise in n.i?

4-5 Years ago it was something I personally rarely heard of, Over the past couple of years it seems to be taking off, In this past month here in Mid Ulster I have heard of 4:confused: I suppose it is rather an uninspiring place to live, Maybe its just around my area.

Hard to say if it's on the rise without any actual statistics (am sure there are some kicking around). I expect it may appear to be because it tends to make the headlines more these days. That, in turn, is because we don't have the troubles dominating the news and ordinary stories get airtime these days.

I am no authority on the matter, however I have gleaned from the news and various documentaries that there is a particular issue with suicides in young men. There have always been suicides, but for some reason this group is most vulnerable.

When you hear on the news that a body has been found but there is nothing suspicious - doesn't that mean a suicide? I hear it often enough on the local news to know that it doesn't really raise an eyebrow.

Let me guess...are you from somewhere around Tandragee?

I personally think it's decreasing but can only go on my own locality - nevertheless it's still shocking and a very sad subject to be reflecting on.

I found this link on statistics but it's more relevent to 2007

Well you have gone from a time when people are finishing uni, starting out new lives, jobs, relationships firm and moving towards marriage.... now you are at an age where those around you may well have found out that the working world is no breeze, getting jobs is not a gimme, owning a house can be crippling and relationships can really go badly wrong.

Of course this will be totally irrelevant if your friends are not typically in and around your age.... but the idea of a 'quarter life crisis' is gaining increasing acceptance and it is not unexpected that the incidence of suicide would increase at that stage.
