in Cutting tax
Hi, I'm looking for some help in sorting out my tax!
I know I can claim for many things but do not know how to go about it.
I'm currently working full time in the football industry and also do some part time work as a teacher and also referee football. I bought a house last year and rent a room to a mate (£240 a month, plus him paying half of the gas + electric).
I know I can claim for the following:
Gym membership
Sky TV (because of the work I do)
Mileage (when not paid at 40 ppm?, I currently get 32p or 34p depending on the job)
Washing Expenses
Football kit/training gear
Suits/shoes for work
Food for my refereeing
Affiliation and subscription fees
ii. Kit including fitness training
Flags
Whistles
Football boots
Trainers
Shirts
Suits
Kits
Dry Cleaning
Watches
iii. Laundry expenses
iv. Training expenses
v. Accountancy fees
vi. Insurance
vii. Mileage expenses at approved mileage rates including travel for:
1. Refereeing
2. CPD Training
3. Attending society meetings
4. Attending fitness training
5. Society Meetings
6. Personal Hearings
viii. Training publications
ix. Postage and stationery costs
x. Flat rate allowance for “use of home” for admin at £156 pa w.e.f 06.04.08
xi. Computer expenses and capital allowances for on line filing of reports
xii. Anything else that is considered appropriate
How do I go about claiming and tracking it all? Any help appreciated. I would guess I could get a fair chunk of money back!

What a long question, I will try and unpick it.
First of all, you cannot claim the cost of these items, but some of them may attract tax relief against the income to which they relate.
Second, we need to know whether you are employed or self employed in these various jobs and what is the nature of your job 'in the football industry'?
Then we can unpick your queries.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Thank you for your reply.
I work as a Football Referee Development Officer full time.
My refereeing is a part time hobby, it costs me more to referee football than I get paid to do.
My teaching is basically teaching referees for which I am self employed, this is the same for my assessing and mentoring roles.0 -
You're going to be surprised at just how few of your expenses list can be set against your earnings for tax. I don't know where you got your list from but several items are simply not allowable expenses at all and some others will only be partly allowable. You'll need to read up on the "wholly exclusively and necessarily" rules on HMRC website to see what expenses can be set against your employment income and the "wholly and exclusively" rules at to what proportions of some of your list can be set against your self employment. You also need to read up on "duality of purpose" rules which is really the killer and the reason why many items aren't allowable in either case. Also remember that you need to make separate expenses claims for the proportions of your items you intend to claim against employment income and another separate claim for proportions of items you intend to claim against self employment income. Some items may need to be split between the separate claims.0
