Hi again folks, first up, thanks for the words of encouragement. First thing to say is that its been bloody hard at times - both me and the wife have had moments of weakness, but thankfully we have managed to talk each other down from the feelings of 'i want it now'. So you need to support each other, cos if you're like us, you'll miss the high you get when you buy the shiny new thing, whatever it maybe - be it a car, TV, kitchen, clothes, etc. Second, realise what is important - as above we both well paid jobs, the wifes is stressfull as she works in child protection, but she enjoys the buzz of it - i work abroad, great money, but frankly hate it...i often bought things to make up for the fact that i felt so crap whilst abroad...i bought all sorts over the 'net whilst thousands of miles away!
We had never really worried about money, and bought, within reason, what the hell we wanted....the wifes wardrobe(s) are full to the brim with Monsoon, Laura Ashley - i had flash cars and motorbikes, big telly, expensive watches and so on, you get the picture.
The bulb came on when one month the account, which we hardly ever looked at (head in the sand scenaro) was empty, with many a loan and bill still to pay. We sat down, discussed what to do, and how much we hated the situation of me working away so much, and that a lot of the spending was to make for the misery of me never being home. Basically we promised that we stop the daftness, cut back to the basics, and get back to whats important before we lose everything. We realised that we could, with some belt tightening, pay off £2k a month, or thereabouts. The loan and credit card companies were most put out every time we paid the accounts off early...it felt bloody great sticking it to them. We shopped at Aldi instead of Tescos, got rid of the big flash gas guzzlers, i now drive a right banger! The wife still has a nice car but it costs sod all as its a work lease car. We went camping this year instead of flying halfway around the planet...even the ropey weather didnt ruin it.
Make no mistake, at the start, the 2 years (minimum) we knew it would take to pay it all off seemed a long way off, as though we might not ever manage it...but now we have. I can quit my job as soon as i can find a job that i can drum up enthusiasm for...perhaps easier said than done in the current climate - but the point is i am no longer trapped, and never will be again...i know what i want to do, its just gonna take some persitance to get into it.
God knows how hard it must be when you have to go on DMPs etc, cos it must seem like donkeys years of struggle...but you WILL get there, and having paid it all back feels bloody great...to all of you in that boat, stick at it, dont give up.
As an aside, i looked at a post i put up a couple of years ago, before the LBM, asking about whether i should take on a £300k mortgage, and that i was sensible with money....Jesus, how deluded was i??????? Thank god i chickened out!
anyway, no more boring stuff from, have to go pick up a new Beemer from the showroom.
damnit, I mean some groceries from aldi......................................0 -
