Ok.. I'm mid - late 30's & I'm a size 16 - 18 apple. My height is approx 5ft 5, I have short bleached blonde hair & fair to medium complexion.
I prefer a style of dress which leans towards the alternative, however, I'm starting to wonder how a gurl of my age should dress without loosing too much of my own style.
Any advice would be appreciated

Eh, I think you should dress in any way that pleases you. Rules are for ignoring or breaking altogether.

Alternative in what way? Like hippie/boho or like punk/goth?
Though in most cases it doesn't matter that much what your age is, you pick what you like an deem appropriate to go out in and enjoy wearing said clothing. Sod what fashion magazines say you should wear at a certain age, it's boring and limits your creativity!
Of course saying that I dress alternatively and even in my twenties I'm moving away from certain things because they don't suit my age now - no acid coloured wide leg punkyfish cords for me anymore, keep getting mistaken for a teenager in them...not good :rotfl:The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. I agree with the above posters, wear what you love to wear! No point getting all dressed up the way the magazines tell you to if it makes you feel less like you.
But if you feel uncomfortable with a very alternative style and you're looking to tone it down because you want to, how about taking a few elements of your style and teaming them with some more basic pieces? Not sure what you mean by alternative, but I'm thinking colourful Converse with jeans and tees, or cherry red DMs with jeans and a white shirt. A band tee looks great with simple trousers and a cardigan or blazer. Or decorate a bag with badges, wear a studded belt, dye your hair a bright colour, wear crazy eyeliner, lots of necklaces piled on top of each other. Just keep the basics simple (jeans, t-shirts, cardigans, etc) and see how you get on.
Hope you find something that reflects your personality but makes you feel more comfortable.

Not sure how to describe my style. It isn't goth at all, maybe a cross between punky & the emo kinda style.
I think I just feel as if maybe I'm trying to hard & dressing a bit young for my age. After saying that, I wouldn't dream of wearing short skirts or shorts without thick tights or leggings. Maybe toning down and altering the style is the way to go, I just need to re-learn fashion

How about looking at photo's of punk female musicians who are now astill wearing the same style but have changed it as they've matured? I'm thinking Blondie and Shirley Manson, both still dressing alternative but very age appropriate and very gorgeously so. Perhaps looking at what these women are now wearing could give you a few ideas on where to turn to clothing-wise.The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all.
