gusto, its an italians on george street, not the old town but it is very nice, friendly staff, great meals and prices are fairly reasonable.
ive stayed on the royal mile a few times and havent really found great resturants in that area to be honest, its all a bit touristy and mainstream i find....work permit granted!0 -
in saying that the witchery is a hotel next to the castle,it has a resutrant in it and the hotel has won awards for being the most romantic hotel a few times if i remember rightly.
im sure you will have to book this in advance though.
ive always been tempted to try it....work permit granted!0 -

What is your budget as there are a host of lovely restaurants in and around the old town that I could recommend but it is all dependent on how much you wish to spend.
As mentioned previously the Witchery is lovely and does a reasonably priced lunchtime menu. The chap that owns the Witchery also runs several other very good quality restaurants. I have posted a link below to a website that details all the restaurants to give you an idea of the menus etc. and all of the restaurants under the James Thomson Collection are running a 3 courses for £30 offer.

The Witchery is the most well know restaurant and you will see that from the guestbook on their website but the Tower restaurant has a greater dramatic backdrop as it is a rooftop restaurant on top of the National Museum opposite Greyfriars Bobby's graveyard overlooking the castle.
Hope this helps0 -
What kind of food do you like as there is no end of choice in Edinburgh.
If you like steaks, I'd recommend the Buffalo Grill on Chapel Street, for lunches Mon - Fri and evening meals 7 days a week.
The List Food and Drink pages are quite useful
