Best place to buy new laptop

Listen to the people advising you to not run Vista.
Personally I feel only someone inexperienced would be happy to run Vista on a machine which has only 2gb or less.
XPpro is the way to go. I've been building PC's for over 10 years and I know that Vista is a power hungry OS that drains resources more than the inland revenue.
Don't fall into the sheep run which Microsoft want you to fall into. The reason they are not licencing any more XP machines is so they can minimise the impact of copyright infringement. It also pushes the requirement for more powerful machines to run their programs which in turn they get profit from. It's a farce really.
I also agree that Tesco/Asda are the best place to grab a cheap laptop which decent spec.
Anything over 2ghz processor/ 2gb RAM /80GB hard drive is good enough for your needs. You should be picking something like that up for less than £350
I recommend ACER/DELL/TOSHIBA for economy.0 -
Have to agree with being anti-Vista although most laptops will force you to go with it due to the licensing agreement. Windows 7 or XP Pro is the Operating System to go for although I am seriously considering installing ubuntu as a second OS.
Linux is like lightning but it's a hassle always trying to find drivers. I still love it though.

And absolutely useless if you find yourself having to use specialised software! I would use it but the graphics package we use is windows only, the CAD package likewise and open office fails to be 100% compatible a troublesome number of times!Always overestimating...0 -
Guys thank you all for the tips and advice. For the record, I was in PC World at the weekend and walked straight out after seeing the prices and hearing one of the sales assistants advise another customer that he had two customers to deal with before he could advise her. Good sign that they were busy but pretty poor if you didn't have time to hang around. Many thanks to all who replied though. :rotfl:0
