  • I also heard that technically you are trespassing if you are on the Supermarkets land after it is closed. Not sure if that is true but a Freegan I know said he had to be very careful cos he knew he was technically breaking the law.

Personally I think if something is in a bin or a skip then obviously the owner doesn't want it so why shouldn't someone else have it?
To be frugal, you need to spend money wisely, simply spending less is not enough.

I know it's not the same thing, but i used to work in a hotel and there was times there'd be ridiculous amounts of food leftover from carveries or buffets. Some of our head chefs were very strict in that we couldn't take or eat any of the food that came back, even if we KNEW it hadn't been out for more than 2 hours, or even if it was spares that were cling filmed in the fridge and not needed!!

It's not like we were gonna serve it to the guests, just seemed a waste when all the staff were passing out with hunger and they'd stand at the bins chucking loads of perfectly safe, fresh food away!!

That is true, but trespassing is not a criminal offence it is a civil "wrong" commonly known as a tort.

You must never do any damage either, say breaking a lock to get the skip open. That would be a criminal offence.

But if all is to be believed from their latest adverts they started sell by dates in the 70's!
I remember the days when we didn't have sell by dates and there wasn't such a wastage problem as there is today.
I think tinned foods are ok after the sell by dates as long as they are not rusty (Rust can be a cause of salmonella )
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Is this food that's been dished up to the patients? If so, I can understand why it would be binned.

tinkerbellsmum - You can probably catch the repeat on ITV player at http://www.itv.com Mind you, I've tried accessing ITV player before and couldn't, but hopefully you won't have any trouble!

In the programme, Anthony Worrall Thompson and Jonathan Maitland run a market stall using food thrown away by supermarkets and they enlist the help of freegans to see how many people can be fed from the supermarket waste food.

According to my tv listings mag, the government is considering abolishing sell-by and display-until dates. It says too that UK supermarkets thrown away 1.6 million tons of food every year.

no. this is food untouched, and left on the trolleys still in their catering, sealed containers. also salads, sandwiches, yoghurts, fruit, wrapped cheese portions etc...
    all thrown away.
my friend feel s so strongly about it, that she has tried to get some action taken.......
but apparently its all due to health and safety

my neighbour won't use any food on the day it is due to "expire" according to the packet date. She throws heaps of stuff out the day before it goes off!

Heartbreaking. I keep stuff over dates when I can , would be more cautious about meat obviously but Milk almost always keeps days after the date. Veg and fruit - I have tried explaining to people - what do you do when you go to a fruit shop and don't have any dates on it? How do you know then? It is the same fruit and veg only with a use by date to get you to buy more.
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

  • My parents ran a deli in the 70s before we really had the idea of deli's in this country. They just about did ok but struggled in (then) working class part of London where my dad's 40 varieties of cheese were pretty alien. So I grew up eating the stuff that had passed its sell by date! Friday nights we always got what was left over from the week. Could be pretty random at times but my mum is a brilliant cook so made the best of it. But I learned that the dates have a lot of tolerance.
