I have some issues with my student loan but require to tell you a bit about my history so that you can see the issues surrounding them.
I went to university in 1994 and then followed with a pgce that I needed to take over 2 years due to financial problems.
When I started working as a teacher in 1999 through to 2002 I was not earning enough to pay back so deferred as I was also undergoing a very nasty divorce and needed to pay my solicitor. I then went poorly with stress and depression as I also suffer from Crohn's disease and applied for help from Norfolk Money line and then later a solicitor with regard to debt difficulties signing an enduring power of attorney as I was no longer able to cope with all the debt letters coming through.
The student loan company during this time tells me that I did not renew deferment and eventually put the accounts into default. It turned out that the solicitor did not apply for deferment on my behalf and I am currently trying to get that situation sorted out.
However, the student loans company state that they have not added any onerous charges (ie charges for arrears letters etc to my account) though the debt collectors were adding copious amounts on numerous occasions. They only cite two occasions when extra charges were added to the account. I am trying now to seek redress from the solicitor because I do not believe he acted correctly for me whilst working for my debt problems.
Meanwhile, in March this year Student Loans advised me that I was again in arrears despite the fact that under my bankruptcy that happened in 2007 I was allowed to pay them £100. In the meantime I hadbeen advised that they had sent three of my accounts to a company called Thesis Servicing. I checked with Thesis Servicing if they were still receiving payments and it turns out that they are indeed receiving payments from SLC Agency each month so therefore student loans should still be receving monies for the other two loans they still hold in my name.
Also, as I am now 51 this coming month I wondered whether I would be in a position to have the debt written off as I understand that loans taken out pre 1997 are null and void once the debtor reaches the age of 50?
Any comments gratefully received
