I really want to help myself but my bank wont help, please help me.

Recently I have been struggling with money, last month I accidently went £200 overdrawn, I was due for £300 to be paid in which went in 5 days later, I have just received my statement and pre advice of charges totalling £215, which is due to come out 10th Sept, I immediately called the bank and said if I thought this was unreasonable amount (as I only expected the usual £28 plus £35 which is the norm) and that if this come out I will be in the same situation next month, the person was rather unhelpful and said they no longer refund any bank charges, I understand I should have been more careful but I have sold some stuff on ebay, I now sell avon AND start a better paid job on Tuesday so what more can I do, I am also worried as my direct debits come out on my old pay date and I now get paid 10 days later, when I asked her to change the date of my direct debit for there loan she didn't know how and said it will take 6 weeks to set up, so this is now going to come out as well, any help please as I am really worried I am doing everyhthing I can to help myself but feel on a downwards spiral,
oh and just to add about 2 years ago I reclaimed my unfair back charge for last 6 years, I now wish I hadn't as it was only £100, since then it is probably in thousands and I don't think I can reclaim again??

  • Also, if you're gonna get bank charged, cancel your DD's

Sorry BTW its RBS ha ha They are useless
  • Who do you have DD's to?

If its gas and elec etc, cancel them and phone up to pay them over the phone. Set up a new account and create new DD's in the new bank account. Pay the people over the phone this month and get a new account.

Do note that you will still be liable to pay off the OD on the old account though so you will have to come to some arrangement with your current account.

In fact it doesn't matter if your DD's are for credit cards etc, just pay everybody over the phone until you set up the new account.

Thanks for your help, DD's arwe mainly Loans :0( Mortgage but that has already been paid this month, council tax and a few other bits and peices, its the loans I am mainly owrried about I don't want to do myself more harm by cancelling them especially as one is with RBS anyway.
  • Set your new wages to go to the new account. If you get payed before the charges go on take the money out. If the loan is with the bank cancel the DD but make sure you phone up to make the payment before it is due or they will take it anyway.

  • If you open another bank account, ensure that it's not with your bank. Move your existing DD's to your new bank account right away, so that they still get paid (I think that's what dannynixon means). That way you won't get more charges if they come out of the old account.

My original bank was very very unhelpful when the same thing happened to me. I walked across the road to another bank and made an appointment for later that day and came back and opened a new basic bank account, with no overdraft limit, no cheque book and best of all, no problems! My new bank has been fantastic!
