There are loads of free websites with revision notes, tasks etc on them. I direct students to lots but the BBC is a good one to start with.

I've just loaded down the free 'GCSE German - Revision Notes' from the Edexel site and I found 26 mistakes, some of them quite blatant ones. Do they not have proof readers?? I also found quite a few mistakes in the Edexel/Heinemann A-Level Maths books.

The following is a detailed list of the mistakes in the GCSE German - Revision Notes and their corrections (you can trust me: I'm a German living in England and I'm a qualified interpreter and translator; I'm also a private tutor.)

Mistakes in GCSE German - Revision Notes

• p2 – Home

An der Wand habe ich viele Poster (not: ‘Auf der Wand habe ich viele Posters’; in German, ‘Poster’ is both singular and plural)

• p2 – Home

Wir wohnen in der Stadt (not: ‘in die Stadt’)

• p2 – Home

Das … , weil da so viel los ist (not: ‘weil es da soviel los ist’; the word ‘es’ in the other examples is correct)

• p2 – Daily routine

Ich fahre … zur Schule (not: ‘nach der Schule’)

• p2 – School – 2nd paragraph

Die Schule ist ganz … mit ungefähr … Schülern (not: ‘Schüler’)

• p2 – School – 2nd paragraph

Nach der Schule habe ich vor, für meine Eltern zu arbeiten (not: ‘für meinen Eltern’)

• p3 – Around town

‘Wie ist der Markt/die Post/die Kirche in Deiner Stadt?’ This question is misleading. In English, would you really ask ‘How is the church in your town’?? The answers given indicate that the question is meant to ask how these locations look like, so the German question would be, ‘Wie sieht der Markt/die Post/die Kirche in Deiner Stadt aus?’

• p3 – Holiday information

Es macht mir Spaß, mich an der Küste zu entspannen (not: ‘ Es macht mir Spaß auf die Küste mich zu entspannen’; also note the punctuation and word order)

• p3 – Holiday information

Es macht mir Spaß, etwas/viel über Architektur und Geschichte zu lernen (not: ‘Es macht mir Spaß, über Architektur und Geschichte zu lernen’. In German, you do not learn about things, you learn something/a lot/etc about them.

• p3 – Weather

Das Wetter ist für den Urlaub sehr wichtig (not: ‘für’s Urlaub’; ‘Urlaub’ is masculine’, not neuter. In any case, there is no apostrophe in ‘fürs’.)

• p3 – Restaurants

Ich esse … saures Essen (not: ‘saueres’)

• 3 – Restaurants

Abende mit … machen immer sehr viel Spaß (not: ‘Abends’)

• p3 – Bank

Ich möchte zwanzig Pfund in Euros umtauschen/umwechseln (not: ‘wechseln’; with the generic word ‘Geld’ you use ‘wechseln’, i.e. to change money, but from one denomination into another denomination, you use ‘umtauschen’ or ‘umwechseln’)

• p3 – Telephone

Kann ich bitte eine Nachricht hinterlassen? (not: ‘lassen’; using this word, the English translation of the sentence would be, ‘Could I please let a message?’)

• p3 – Reporting a loss

… auf dem Rücken (not: ‘auf den Rücken’)

• p3 – Health and safety

Du solltest/musst … anrufen (not: ‘sollst’. ‘Du solltest’ = ‘You should’, ‘Du musst’ = ‘You have to’. ‘Du sollst’ = ‘Thou shalt’).

• p4 – Healthy living

Ich möchte topfit werden (not: ‘Topfit’)

• p4 – Jobs

Ich gebe mein Geld für Schminke aus (not: ‘Schminken’; use the singular as you do in English, you buy ‘make-up,’ not ‘make-ups’)

• p5 – Informal letters

Bis bald/Mit bestem Gruß/Viele Grüße (not: bis bald/mit bestem Gruß/viele Grüße)

• p5 – Formal letters

Hochachtungsvoll/Mit freundlichen Grüßen/Mit bestem Dank (not: hochachtungsvoll/mit freundlichen Grüßen/mit bestem Dank

• p5 – Your past

Ich habe (7) Jahre lang die … besucht (not: ‘studiert’; ‘studieren’ means ‘to study at a university’)
