Will taking £12,000 tax free sum from my private pension effect any benefits.

It wont affect your pension but it may affect some means tested benefits.
But is that a bad thing, it means that you can pay for things with money you have earned yourself instead of what other tax payers have earned and are giving you in benefits. Self respect is the phrase i was looking for.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
